Just a thought about wealth by Quincy J.L Ondona

This is one of the transcribed articles of my Sunday Bible Sharing during our cottage prayer meeting way back 2007. I forgot the exact date, I just recovered the notes I made for this sharing recently.

In this world, money seems to be all that it takes to live. How to gain money seems to be our greatest preoccupation, at least in our mind today.

As early as childhood, we learn the value of money, the value of wealth. We learn that money is indispensable so that even in our childhood existence natututo na tayong magkimkim ng pera.
When a student like us buy Cheding Peanuts, yong malaki, para pasalubong, it costs us 200+. If we have a monthly allowance of 2000 pesos, thats 10% deduction.
You know Carlos Slim Helu? According to Fortune magazine, he has overtaken Bill Gates as the richest man in the world. How much is his total asset? Fifty nine billion US dollars! For Carlos Slim buying a multimillion luxury car is as easy as eating Cheding Peanuts!
And yet, the Bible calls money as the root of all evil. Payag kayo nun? Ako payag ako,if properly interpreted. Actually, the proper translation is “the love of money is the root of all evil.”
We always notice it that those individuals who became suddenly rich also suddenly changed their attitudes.
We exchange our lives for just a strip of land, when the fact is that when we die, we will only need six feet of it. Instead of us controlling wealth, it controls us, and at other times,it decides our lives.
Don’t get me wrong, of course wealth is useful. I also dreamed of having a lot of money someday.
Most important, we need something that lasts, from here up to eternity.
We need God,we need Christ,we need salvation.
Businesses don’t always give us good profits. Jobs are not permanent. But God never fades; Christ never fades from everlasting to everlasting. Living a life with Him is more important than living a life with all the worldly luxuries.
You know Kurt Cobain? The lead singer of Nirvana,a famous singer, mayaman, mapera, sikat. I guess, we also dream the kind of fortune he had. But he was addicted to drugs, hindi niya nagamit ng maayos ang kapalaran niya. Until the police found him dead, he committed suicide.
Hitler, the man who have conquered much of Europe, mayaman, sikat, makapangyarihan, died by killing himself alongside the ruins of Berlin.
Alexander the Great, that great man of Macedonia, defeated Cyrus, conquered India, founder of one of the world’s largest empire, mayaman, mapera, sikat,he died of fever-typhoid fever. What does it mean?
Here I am, I have conquered many lands, but now I will die bearing nothing, not even a handful of soil.
Gawin nating meaningful ang buhay natin.Huwag tayong mamatay ng walang kwenta, not knowing life’s purpose, and not knowing God.
That meaningful life can only be achieved when we anchor it on a solid foundation, and that is Christ.
According to APO in their song Tupang Ligaw,
Kayamanan at lahat ng kalayawan
Wala pala itong kabuluhan

May we find that purpose of life in Him!
To God be the glory!
